My online business journey

Started my digital business adventure back in 2015, I dove into the bustling world of Amazon sales. The landscape was vastly different then, but as the marketplace swelled with new sellers, the competition turned fierce. Rising to the challenge, I launched a fresh brand in 2018, and the growth that followed was nothing short of phenomenal. In just a handful of years, the brand soared, marking the beginning of a thrilling expansion.

Since then, my entrepreneurial spirit has led me to diversify my interests extensively within the digital realm. From eCommerce (beyond Amazon) to the world of publishing, from sharing insights through blogging to online courses and offering agency work, I’ve ventured into a myriad of arenas.

The journey hasn’t been a walk in the park. It’s been an intense marathon of learning, experimenting, and sometimes stumbling. Yet, each step has been invaluable, teaching me the ins and outs of various online business models. This rigorous journey has transformed me into a serial online entrepreneur, with over $20 million in products and services sold under my belt.

My background in the corporate world laid a solid foundation, but it’s been the blend of hard work, relentless learning, and a dash of serendipity that’s propelled me this far. It’s been a wildly exhilarating ride, one that’s taught me the ropes of digital entrepreneurship inside out. And it’s a ride I’m nowhere near ready to get off of. Here’s to the ongoing adventure, to the trials and triumphs that lie ahead, and to the endless possibilities that the online business world has to offer.

Past corporate life

Staying in the corporate world for over a decade gave me a unique opportunity to hone my skills, and those experiences ultimately would be incredibly helpful when I finally decided to go the full-time online entrepreneur route. 

Although the two industries are vastly different, some of my skills were transferable, such as my expertise in research, analysis, systems building and methodologies from my consulting days as well as gaining an insider perspective of the capital world from my time as VP at a high tech venture capital. 

The networks and knowledge I acquired not only made it much smoother for me to transition into truly working for myself, but also acted as a springboard for the success of my new endeavours by helping me find and secure my niche quicker.

Immigration 

Immigrating from Shanghai to Toronto in 2013 was a huge shift in my life. While I was 29 and had a stable job and bright future prospects where I used to live, finding employment in Toronto proved difficult. Despite my adequate qualifications, employers often frowned upon my lack of “local experience” and deemed me “overqualified.” I managed to land the jobs at last, and I really appreciate the people who gave me the opportunities at that time when I needed them most. 

It wasn’t easy getting through this part of my life. But it taught me about persistence, which later became my favorite business quote that, 

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent won’t; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius won’t; unrewarded genius is practically a cliché. Education won’t; the world is full of educated fools. Persistence and determination alone are all-powerful.”

Even considering the challenges it presented, immigrating was an unforgettable experience that irrevocably marked my past.

Closing words

As the journey of life goes on, knowledge is something that should be celebrated. Every day we can pick up something new, and when we share what we learn we grow as people. As they say, knowledge is power! 

For me though, I don’t just want to learn; it’s equally important for me to try and find new opportunities. Whether it’s an innovative way of doing something old or a chance to embrace and validate something cutting edge new, I’m open to almost anything if it helps me reach my potential and bring value to people.
